The French National Bar Council at the Rencontres Africa 2016

The French National Bar Council was present at the Palace of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council in Paris to participate in Les Rencontres Africa 2016 on 22 and 23 September. We take a look back at two days of conferences and meetings which focused on cooperation between Africa and France.

Les Rencontres Africa 2016 were organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Digital Sector, in collaboration with AfricaFrance and the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE). They contribute to the forging of economic and human ties between Africa and France, for a shared future.

Two days of conferences brought together French and African economic players who work in close cooperation to develop relationships and commercial exchanges. Today, the African continent plays an essential role in the economic world and represents a major challenge.

The French National Bar Council took part in these Rencontres by setting up a stand to communicate the role of lawyers to businesses. For a company to be successful abroad, it needs to set up its activities in a different legal system, master a new regulatory environment and be familiar with local custom. In Africa, the number of states and their diversity makes this even harder. By identifying legal difficulties, lawyers advise businesses so that they can define their development strategy.

This mechanism for regional integration (created in 1993) brings together 17 member states and aims to establish a legal and judicial framework for business activities in the region. To this end, a series of Acts has been created to standardise corporate law, facilitating exchanges and investments and guaranteeing businesses’ legal certainty and judicial security.

In cooperation with the Bars of Bordeaux and Lyon (represented by the lawyers Jacques-Brice Momnougui and Pierre Fronton) and the Association for the Unification of Law in Africa (UNIDA, represented by Mr. Momoya Sylla), the role of lawyers in assisting businesses was promoted.

The French National Bar Council also organised a conference on the business environment in Africa. Louis Degos, President of the Prospective Committee chaired debates on the economic environment of Africa (Caline Kamya, Member of the European and International Affairs Committee of the French National Bar Council), the development of arbitration (Aly Fall, member of the Bar Association of Senegal) and the integration of the principles behind Business and Human Rights into the African continent (Véronique Tuffal Nerson, Member of the European and International Affairs Committee of the French National Bar Council).
