The French National Bar Council: partner of the Global Forum on Law, Justice and Development

In September 2016, the French National Bar Council became a partner of the Global Forum on Law, Justice and Development. This partnership falls in line with the French National Bar Council’s policy of taking part in and contributing to the major international fora where tomorrow’s standards are being developed, such as the World Bank, to take part in discussions on subjects of global importance. As a partner of the event, the French National Bar Council will gain access to the World Bank’s extensive and sizeable network, and will be able to interact and work with partners from international, government and non-government organisations.

The Global Forum provides an innovative and dynamic platform for knowledge and exchange, with the purpose of creating links between all actors of justice, law and development around the world. The forum allows for better exchange of legal knowledge concerning the challenges posed by development, as well as providing the possibility for a greater exploitation of universities and research institutions in helping to face these challenges. The French National Bar Council intends to bring all its expertise to this project.

To this end, the European and International Affairs Committee of the French National Bar Council is organising a conference in Washington on 5 December at the World Bank, as part of Law, Justice and Development Week. This session will bring together Véronique Tuffal-Nerson, lawyer and member of the European and International Affairs Committee of the French National Bar Council, Jimena Reyes, Americas Director at the International Federation for Human Rights, Ms G. Van Rossum, Ambassador for Corporate Social Responsibility of France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and Mr. Coco Kayudi, President of the Bar of Kinshaa-Matete. The conference will focus on Business and Human Rights and the role of lawyers and businesses in bringing about climate justice. Targets 16.3 and 16.5 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are, respectively, to “Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all” and “Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms”, and lawyers play an integral role in achieving these goals. It is important that this role is made known and promoted and that the profession receives the preparation it needs to play it.
