Please join us for a series of fundamental and practical discussions involving panelists around the world to discuss, including European and Asian panelists, new legal trends in Europe for the global interests to be protected in 21st Century.

Impacts of EU Human Rights Due Diligence Directive are serious even in Asia, including Japan. The EU Directive would require Member EU States to transpose into national law a corporate due diligence duty to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for adverse human rights and environmental impacts. The duty would apply to a business company’s own operations, its subsidiaries and their value chains. In other words, the EU Directive will have strong impacts not only in Europe but in Asia, including Japan.

Why the EU Directive is needed? Why a company out of EU should be compelled to obey the EU Directive? A possible answer is that the interests to be protected by the Directive are global ones. The concept has emerged in these two decades by the rule-making activities for anti-money laundering, anti-corruption and environmental protections.

Now we should look back the legal phenomenon occurred in 21st Century and examine what we can do for business corporations, i.e., our clients. At the same time, we should discuss on whether or not the legal trends can be persuasive out of Europe, including Asia.

The seminar will be held on Thursday, March 21 and March 22 in Tokyo. A Cocktail Reception and a Gala Dinner will be held in the evening of March 21. An excursion to Kamakura, the old capital of Japan established by Samurai will be organised on Sunday, March 24.

We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo!
